Toyota is stepping up its electric game with the refreshed 2026 bZ all-electric SUV, introducing significant improvements in range, charging capabilities, and design updates.
One of the standout upgrades for the 2026 model is its impressive range. The newly available XLE Front-Wheel-Drive Plus (FWD Plus) model now features a larger 74.7-kWh lithium-ion battery, bumping up its range to an estimated 314 miles per charge—a substantial 25% increase from the previous 252-mile rating. For those looking for a more economical option, the XLE Front-Wheel Drive will still offer a solid 57.7-kWh battery.

Charging just got a whole lot easier, too. The new bZ now includes the North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, making it compatible with thousands of DC fast charging stations across the country. Plus, the convenience of Plug & Charge technology means you no longer have to juggle multiple charging apps—just plug in, charge up, and go. In ideal conditions, expect a quick recharge from 10% to 80% battery in around 30 minutes.
Power isn't being left behind, either. Thanks to updated silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductors in Toyota’s compact eAxles, the all-wheel-drive (AWD) model gets a serious boost—up 50% to an exhilarating 338 horsepower. This means going from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.9 seconds. Front-wheel-drive models also see a nice jump, increasing their output to 221 horsepower from the previous 201 horsepower.
Toyota’s simplifying things for drivers by changing the model's name from bZ4X to simply "Toyota bZ." This aligns nicely with the fresh look for 2026, featuring subtle yet stylish exterior tweaks like sleeker front fascia, slimmer LED daytime running lights, and color-matched overfenders that blend seamlessly into the design.
Inside, the bZ gets even more comfortable and tech-savvy. The redesigned cabin now sports a streamlined dashboard featuring a large 14-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia touchscreen, making navigation and entertainment more intuitive than ever. Adding a touch of elegance, you'll enjoy customizable ambient lighting with a choice of 64 colors, perfect for matching your mood or style. Convenience is also enhanced with dual front wireless chargers, letting everyone keep their devices ready to go.
The refreshed 2026 Toyota bZ will be available in both XLE and Limited trims, each offering a choice between front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. Expect to see these new models hitting Toyota dealerships in the second half of 2025, with pricing details to be announced closer to the launch date.
Two Battery Options and Quicker Charging
For 2026, there are two battery sizes to pick from—a standard 57.7-kWh battery and a beefier 74.7-kWh pack. Here’s what you can expect for driving range on a full charge:
- 314 miles (XLE FWD Plus, 74.7-kWh battery)*
- 299 miles (Limited FWD, 74.7-kWh battery)*
- 288 miles (XLE AWD, 74.7-kWh battery)*
- 278 miles (Limited AWD, 74.7-kWh battery)*
- 236 miles (XLE FWD, 57.7-kWh battery)* *Toyota range estimates may vary based on driving conditions and usage
Toyota is updating the bZ with some handy new charging features, making it more practical for everyday use. You'll find the charging port conveniently located on the vehicle's front right side, along with an upgraded 11-kW onboard AC charger, a step up from the previous 7-kW unit. Plus, the bZ now includes a dual-voltage charging cable for versatility.
To make life easier, especially in colder climates, Toyota has added a battery pre-conditioning feature. This nifty system optimizes the battery temperature for quicker DC fast-charging. Drivers can activate it manually or let the car handle it automatically by simply setting a fast-charging station as the destination in the navigation system.
Another cool feature for the 2026 bZ is the addition of paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel. These paddles aren’t for shifting gears like in a traditional car; instead, they control regenerative braking, allowing drivers to easily adjust the braking intensity to recover more energy and boost battery efficiency.
The updated bZ also gets a smarter battery thermal management system, including a water-to-water heat exchanger and a heating adjustment valve to raise battery temperatures when necessary. This is particularly useful for optimizing charging speeds in colder weather.
Toyota didn't stop there—additional energy-saving enhancements include:
- A heat pump system for efficient heating and air-conditioning.
- Heated front seats and steering wheel as standard.
- An optional radiant heater to keep your feet and legs cozy.
- Optional heated rear seats and ventilated front seats.
When it comes to battery safety, Toyota has incorporated comprehensive protection features. The battery's design and multiple monitoring systems continuously track voltage, current, and temperature, quickly identifying and preventing any abnormal heating conditions. Additionally, a high-resistance coolant circulation system is included to guard against thermal events, even under demanding scenarios such as repeated high-speed driving and rapid charging.
Impressive Performance
The 2026 AWD bZ models now feature the surprisingly capable X-MODE system. X-MODE lets the driver easily select different driving modes tailored to road conditions, automatically optimizing brake control and power delivery at each wheel for improved traction and handling.
One highlight is Grip-Control, activated at lower speeds, which modulates motor power to enhance off-road performance. This smart feature adjusts to varying road surfaces, maintaining a steady speed to prevent slipping, especially on rough terrain.
Driving dynamics are enhanced by the BEV-specific e-TNGA platform, offering a low center of gravity and a sturdy chassis, thanks to the placement of the high-capacity lithium-ion battery pack flat beneath the floor. Additional structural rigidity is provided by the battery cross-framing.
The bZ also benefits from a lightweight body, reinforced with high-tensile steel around the battery pack. Combined with a dynamic suspension setup, this contributes significantly to the vehicle’s responsive driving feel. Moreover, the intelligent throttle ensures smoother acceleration and deceleration, while Vehicle Stability Control helps drivers maintain steady control, even under challenging conditions.
Design Updates and Comfort Improvements
The Toyota bZ comfortably resides in the small SUV segment, boasting an 8.2-inch ground clearance and dimensions designed for a practical yet agile drive. With an overall length of 184.6 inches, width of 73.2 inches, height of 65 inches (including antenna), and a generous 112.2-inch wheelbase, it delivers both comfort and stability.
For 2026, the bZ sports fresh updates inside and out. The front end receives a sleek, refined makeover, and the cabin features a newly redesigned center console and instrument panel with a 14-inch multimedia touchscreen as standard.
Both the XLE and Limited trims emphasize tech and comfort. The dashboard now offers a slimmer profile and customizable ambient lighting with 64 color choices. Tech enthusiasts will appreciate dual Qi-compatible wireless smartphone chargers. Additionally, standard features across trims include a heated SofTex-trimmed steering wheel equipped with regenerative braking paddles and a convenient top-mounted Multi-Information Display.
The interior offers ample space, with generous front legroom (42.1 inches) and rear legroom (35.3 inches). Cargo capacity is also practical, offering 27.7 cubic feet behind the second-row seats.
For a personalized look, the 2026 bZ offers a variety of attractive exterior color options, including color-matched overfenders for select shades such as Wind Chill Pearl, Heavy Metal, or Black. Both single and two-tone paint combinations are available, ensuring something to suit every style.

Promising Intuitive Connected Tech
Every trim includes a large 14-inch touchscreen powered by Toyota's own Audio Multimedia system, designed right here in Texas. The system includes several Toyota Connected Services trials, offering plenty of handy features.
With a three-year trial of Drive Connect, drivers get Intelligent Assistant, Cloud Navigation, and Destination Assist. Just say “Hey Toyota” to activate voice commands for directions, find points of interest, adjust audio, or tweak the climate settings. Cloud Navigation keeps your maps updated in real-time, using Google's latest data, while Destination Assist connects you to a live agent anytime you need directions.
For music lovers, the bZ comes standard with a six-speaker audio system. But audiophiles might prefer the optional JBL Premium Audio setup with nine speakers, an 800-watt amplifier, and a 9-inch subwoofer.
Connectivity is further enhanced with standard wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, dual Bluetooth phone pairing, and an optional Wi-Fi Connect trial, turning your bZ into a 4G hotspot. Plus, integrated streaming from Apple Music® and Amazon Music makes entertainment seamless.
Safety and convenience get a boost with the Toyota App, featuring Remote Connect (three-year trial), allowing remote control of climate settings, seat heating, charging management, and more. And the innovative Toyota Digital Key lets you use your smartphone instead of a physical key, easily sharing access via the app.
Active Safety & Driver Assist Tech
The 2026 bZ features Toyota Safety Sense 3.0™, using radar and camera systems to enhance safety and convenience. Features include Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign Assist, Automatic High Beams, and Proactive Driving Assist. Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and Safe Exit Alert also come standard.
The bZ includes Toyota’s Star Safety System, adding stability control, traction control, anti-lock braking, brake-force distribution, brake assist, and Smart Stop Technology®. Additional driver assists like Traffic Jam Assist, Lane Change Assist, Front Cross-Traffic Alert, and a Panoramic View Monitor are standard on the Limited trim, making every drive safer and easier.
