Tesla has officially unveiled the Model YL in China, a new variant of its best-selling SUV with extended dimensions, third-row seating, and a unique market focus. Featuring a longer wheelbase and a true six-seat layout, it’s designed to fill the space between the standard Model Y and the larger Model X. With its improved practicality and comfort—alongside limited updates to the Model X, some speculate the Model YL could eventually replace the older flagship. So far, Tesla hasn't announced any plans to bring the Model YL beyond China.

A Real Six-Seater Configuration
Unlike the optional seven-seat layout available in some markets, the Model YL introduces a proper six-seat (2-2-2) configuration with second-row captain’s chairs. This layout offers better comfort and accessibility, especially for rear passengers. The extended wheelbase translates to more legroom in the third row, and the center aisle allows for easier entry and exit.
The design appears to be aimed squarely at family buyers who value both functionality and a touch of luxury, a space previously occupied by the Model X.
Market Strategy: China First
The Model Y L is currently intended exclusively for the Chinese market. With domestic competition heating up, Tesla's move appears strategic. The company has seen a 17.5% drop in China sales during the first half of 2025, and this new model may help attract buyers looking for more versatility.
Tesla teased the Model Y L's arrival with a "see you in the fall" message on Chinese social media, pointing to an official release later in 2025. Although there's been no mention of a global launch, Tesla watchers are already speculating about the model’s potential in markets like the U.S. and Europe, where demand for family-oriented SUVs remains high.
