Mazda Recalls 2024 CX-90 for Steering Issue: What You Need to Know

Mazda recalled more than 40,000 CX-90 vehicles from the 2024 line-up due to a steering system issue that could result in sudden loss of power steering assist, increasing the risk of accidents.

January 19, 2024

Mazda North American Operations has announced a significant recall affecting more than 40,000 of its 2024 CX-90 vehicles. This recall, identified under NHTSA Campaign Number 24V022000, addresses a critical safety concern involving the potential loss of power steering assist.

The issue centers around an assembly flaw within the steering system's worm gear. This defect may lead to a sudden loss of power steering assist, dramatically increasing the risk of a crash. The friction caused by the worm gear can make the vehicle harder to steer, especially at lower speeds where power steering is most needed.

Losing power steering, particularly while in motion, can pose a significant safety risk. Drivers may experience an unexpected change in steering effort, potentially leading to loss of vehicle control. Although there have been no reported crashes or injuries so far, Mazda has received multiple reports of related steering problems, underlining the importance of addressing this issue promptly.

The Solution Offered

Mazda's remedy involves two key steps:

  • Replacing the Spring: Dealers will replace the spring engaging the worm gear with an improved part. This new part is designed to reduce spring force to the gear, mitigating the issue.
  • Reapplying Grease: Additionally, dealers will reapply grease to the gear teeth to ensure smoother operation and reduce friction.

These repairs will be carried out at no charge to vehicle owners.

Starting March 18, 2024, Mazda will begin sending out notification letters to owners of the affected vehicles. To ensure safety, owners are strongly advised to respond to this recall as soon as possible.
